As the Edgemont High School wrestling team kicks off a new season, I had to the chance to talk with Marc Ficuciello ’14 and get his thoughts on being confident as a wrestler, his favorite music and the New York Giants.
First off, how many years have you wrestled and why did you choose wrestling?
This is my fourth year wrestling including one year modified and I like wrestling because when you win it’s one of the best feelings ever.
Do you have any traditions going into a match?
No, not really. Just jumping up, getting warm. When I get on the mat, I just focus. I don’t do anything really special.
Obviously confidence is key for a wrestler, so has there been a moment where you felt intimidated or that has never been an issue with you?
Never, I’m always thinking “I’m going to win, this is my match”.
Now in the event that you suffer a loss, what is mindset heading into the next match?
Losing made me a better man because now I know what to train on and how to get better.
You’re a senior now and you have taken more of a leadership role with the team, helping with the younger wrestlers. What does that mean to you?
It feels nice because when I came on the team those same seniors that I looked up now look at me the same way.
What are your top three goals for the wrestling season?
To become a better wrestler than I was last year, to place in the sections or win the sections and to win the sections as a team would be special.
What is your favorite pump up music? Anything specific?
Rap music but nothing specific.
Thanksgiving is coming up so I want to know what are you thankful for?
I am thankful for my family, friends and everything they do for me.
What is your favorite food?
Probably pasta (Laughing) because I am Italian.
What is favorite sport other than wrestling?
Other than wrestling… football. I started playing last year as a wide receiver, it’s a lot of fun.
Do you have a favorite football team?
Yes, the Giants. (Laughing) They’re not doing too well.
So give me your opinion on Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin.
Pretty sucky. They need to step it up. He (Eli) needs to be more clutch like he was before.
After high school, do have any goals for wrestling?
I am probably not going to wrestle in college, but I would love to come back here and see how the team is doing.
