SCARSDALE, N.Y. — One of Edgemont varsity wrestling coach Pete Jacobson’s goals each year is to develop his wrestlers into well-rounded individuals through community-service projects.

“We are working hard to develop student-athletes that are successful in wrestling but, more importantly, also are positive contributors in all other aspects of their lives with their family, their academics and their community,” Jacobson said. “We’ve really been emphasizing the mantra, ‘Creating Champions on the mat and in life.’ ”

The Edgemont varsity wrestling team will continue its annual community-service project when it participates in the third annual Fire Truck Pull for Cancer at 9 a.m. Sunday in Pearl River. This event was created by Nanuet varsity wrestling coach Carmine Serra, whose wife is a cancer survivor.

“We are excited to be part of this event,” said Jacobson, a New York City firefighter. “Coach Serra deserves all the credit for putting this event together and we are happy to help out a great cause.”

Along with the fire truck pull, the past few years the Edgemont wrestling team has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and worked with at-risk homeless youths at a nearby community center.
