As the 2013 Section 1 Championships ended on Sunday at Irvington High School, the Edgemont Panthers had two more champions to add to their ever-growing list: senior Trey Aslanian (120 lbs) and junior Chris Kim (182 lbs).
The Panthers finished in third-place overall, with 11 wrestlers placing in the top 6 of their respective weight classes. Equally impressive, was Edgemont’s record-breaking six finalists and six All-Section Team selections.
The championship victory marked Aslanian’s fourth in the tournament, making him Edgemont first-ever four-time Section Champion in addition to being Edgemont’s all-time win leader, a mark currently sitting at 173 and counting.
Aslanian’s finals match, perhaps the most anticipated bout of the day, pitted him against fellow multiple-time State Qualifier Anthony Calvano of Nanuet. The two wrestled to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first period and traded escapes in the second and third to take a 1-1 score into the final 30 seconds of regulation. With 13 seconds on the clock, Aslanian scored a takedown and rode Calvano out to victory and to another place in the Edgemont record books.
Kim also had a tremendous day, pinning Irvington’s Michael Minieri in the quarter-finals in 31 seconds, before battling Matt Zefi of Westlake to a 13-6 major decision in the semi-finals. The championship finals bout had Pleasantville senior Pete Salzarulo squaring off against Kim. Kim, looking sharp and fast, put on what amounted to a takedown clinic rattling off three in the first period and two more in the remaining frames. He finished with a 14-5 major decision victory and his first Section 1 Title, after finishing as runner-up last year.
The four remaining Championship Finalists for Edgemont were freshman Kyle Aslanian (99 lbs); junior Tyler Aslanian (106 lbs) and seniors Jack McCormack (152 lbs) and Jason Worobow (195 lbs).
Another great success story for the Panthers was junior Sam Klein (126 lbs) who came into the tournament at the 12th seed at his weight and battled back to a fifth-place finish, his first place finish in any tournament. In his fifth-place bout Sam secured a hard fought pin over Lourdes’ Brian Luciano. Luciano and Klein had met in the quarter-finals earlier in the day with Luciano coming away with the victory. The re-match however would go a very different way as Klein finished off Luciano in 2:40 to take fifth in the Section.
Edgemont had four other wrestlers take sixth: freshman Max Worobow (113 lbs); junior Will Graybeal (138 lbs) and seniors Sky Korek (132 lbs) and Ross Kantor (160 lbs).
Trey Aslanian and Chris Kim will next compete in the New York State Championships at the Times Union Center in Albany on Friday and Saturday, February 22 and 23. More information on the State Championships can be found here.
